North Shore Ukulele Circle

We usually have 8-12 people attending, so we all play in a big circle with no amplification. This club is about playing together, not following an amplified band.

Songs are chosen on the fly by going around the table and asking each person to pick a song they want to play. I add some new songs each month to the supplement, and past-months' supplement songs are also fair game.

Once the supplement gets large enough, we'll update our main songbook to add in new songs that we like and remove songs that we never play anymore.

We have a core group of regulars, some people who can only show up occasionally, visitors to Vancouver who want to play while they're here, and people who show up once and never return. All are welcome!

Yes! A lot of players tend to underestimate their level because they compare themselves to the top Youtubers, professional players, or professional teachers. If you look through our book and feel comfortable with all the songs listed in green 🟢 and some of the others, come check us out! The fastest way to learn is to play with other people.

It depends on the instrument! The main ones people ask about are below:

Guitar: Sorry, no guitars, because of acoustics. I've tried allowing acoustic and electric guitars before and found that single guitar can drown out a room full of ukuleles. Since being able to hear everyone else is an important part of our vibe, guitars have to stay at home.

Bass Guitar: HELL YES! I usually bring my 5-string bass and try to add bass for songs that I don't need to lead, but I'm a pretty novice bass player. Anyone with good rhythm and the ability to follow the organic tempo and rhythm of a group is welcome to sit in for me.

Cajon/percussion: ALSO YES! But like with bass, you'll be the only one carrying an important section so you should be confident in your ability to keep a rhythm and to adapt when the group doesn't follow you.

Tambourine, shakers, train whistle, slide whistle, kazoo: Some songs are 1000% better with the accents provided by these instruments.

Banjo, Banjolele, Mandolin: Some songs are also better with a bit of twang! Though if you have a full-sized banjo you might need to sit at the back while you play it.

Yup! Bonus points if you can harmonize!

Sure! There are some comfy couches to sit on. And if you can't leave your kid at home, there's a coffee table and wifi to support colouring, tablets, and books.

I don't charge a fee, and the songbooks are available as PDFs you can view on a tablet or laptop. If you drive, you might have to pay for parking if you can't find a free spot. And you should plan on buying a soda or other drink from the bar to help us be good guests. If you want a printed copy of the main songbook, I have some available for $20 but that's purely optional.

Not really... There's a very large flight of stairs if you come in from the main entrance. But the back entrance is the height of a loading dock, with a few winding stairs coming up from the road. To me, it seems like it would be difficult to lift a wheelchair up those steps. Once inside, there is a wheelchair-accessible washroom.

We try to buy something to thank the brewery for hosting us. Apart from beer, they have some premixed cocktails, sodas, wine, a cider, NA kombucha, and a great NA beer (my drink of choice).

I started my first ukulele club in Pleasanton, California at the tail end of COVID in 2022. When my family moved up here in 2025, I didn't find many ukulele clubs that fit a working parent's schedule, so I started this in October 2025 at Mollie Nye House. We moved to North Point Brewing in March 2026.
